Dear Friends,
Back in my art school days, the term “flowery” was considered an insult. It meant your work was too decorative, lavish, or showy. I always wondered how something as beautiful as a flower could be used to diminish someone’s creative work. I suppose this is because flowers are associated with the feminine, and all things feminine were taken less seriously in the art world—unless of course the artist rendering the feminine was a man.
Decades later, I could care less whether someone described my work as flowery. I will take it as a compliment because flowers are phenomenal and their message to us is nothing less than revolutionary. The flower world has an energy and magic all its own. Every spring flowers will bud, blossom and even flourish no matter who claims to be ruling the land or what chaos they attempt to conjure. So bring on the roses, the daffodils, the cherry blossoms, the lilacs, the poppies, and even the dandelions. We need them more than ever.
Studies consistently demonstrate that fresh flowers can promote physical healing and positively impact mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and improving mood. The presence of flowers in one's environment can also strengthen feelings of compassion and social connection.
Many Indigenous peoples understand the many healing properties of flowers and even believe flowers are the messengers from the spirit realm. In Ireland, it has been said that the poets are people who can translate the messages from the flowers into human language. I love the idea of the Irish literary canon actually emerging from the blossoms on the sacred island.
So why am I going on about flowers? We have an opportunity to nourish ourselves and celebrate the invincible beauty of flowers at The Meadow this Saturday with our Botanical Brunch. You’ll have a chance to arrange your own expressive still life using flowers from our Botanical Buffet. Then you can use a variety of mixed media to create your own expressive still life portrait. This is a great way to celebrate spring and engage in some self care as this gorgeous season unfolds.

This workshop will include mindfulness, conversational prompts, a variety of teas, and homemade banana bread! You will return home with a bouquet of flowers, a still life painting, and a new sense of connection to yourself and others. Come on your own or bring your mom, your bestie, or your kiddo. This activity is designed to bring joy and refresh the spirit in a time that feels pretty heavy.
We have just a few spots left. So its best to save your place at our craft table sooner than later!
